From the ground up in order, embrace
01:39 min. / 2007

Attempting to strengthen my relationship with the digital medium I set out to create a video out of binary code. Binary code is a system of ones and zeroes at the core of everything digital; It is the foundation. The result was for me an entirely new form of exploring the digital medium’s natural aesthetics.

Nick Briz is a new-media artist living and working in Chicago IL. He has been an active participant in “dirty” new-media, specifically through his research and writing on glitch art as well as through his lectures and curatorial work in a number of institutions and events. In addition, his own work has been exhibited at various national and international festivals, such as the FILE Media Arts Festival in Rio de Janeiro Brazil, the Sydney Underground Film Festival, the European Media Arts Festival in Osnabruek Germany, and the Images Festival in Toronto Canada, among others. He is currently working towards an MFA in Film, Video and New Media at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Fences
06:00 min. / 2008

Fences is a short abstract handmade film, creating optical illusions by exploring graphic fence and wheel structures. The title refers to the ‘fence phenomenon’, which was first observed in 1821 by the Scottish publisher John Murray (J.M.): the spokes of a wheel which are viewed in motion through a series of vertical bars, assume the optical illusion of a curvature of the spokes. This perception was the overture to the invention of film. As underlying theme for the soundtrack, Hans Muller has chosen the noise heard when a stick is dragged along metal railings. The music is recorded through a MIDI driven grand piano.

Director, animation, co production: José Vonk
Production: Astrid Wortelboer
Composer: Hans Muller
Sound mix: Ronald Bosdam

José Vonk studied at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy and attended various animation workshops in the Netherlands, the UK and Japan. In 1977 she founded the animation studio De Dames, together with Helga Kos. She also works as a teacher at the Audiovisual department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy in Amsterdam.

Dromosphäre
10:00 min. / 2010

A visual study of velocity. The ephemeral phenomenon becomes palpable through an apparatus the filmmaker build himself. A speed sculpture begins a relativity dance along space-time avenues lined with uncertainty trees. A research on the representation of four dimensional space-time, described by Albert Einstein in his theory of special relativity, led to the making of this film. Using a scale model of a sports car and a dolly synchronized to the shutter of the still camera, Fleisch has produced a capturing visualization of the phenomenon of speed, which playfully references to Paul Virilio and Jeremy Clarkson.

Thorsten Fleisch made his first film experiments with his dad’s super 8 camera when still in school. Studied experimental film with Peter Kubelka at the Städelschule in Frankfurt/Germany. His films received several awards and are shown at festivals worldwide like: New York Film Festival, Ars Electronica, Transmediale, Ottawa International Animation Festival, Clermont-Ferrand Short Film Festival.
A concert of emergent systems
Improvisations with a Sensor-Sound-Machine

Timlin employs improvisation and non-linear digital sensor systems to create music in which a delicate balance exists between the human and machine. A music at once intuitive and outlandish. Explosive and subdued. Violent and meditative. Timlin has developed an intuitive interaction with his custom made Sensor-Sound-Machine maintaining a subtle balance between order and chaos. His music happens in real-time, often surprising the artist as well as the audience. His performances are effectively a dialog between man and machine.

Marko Timlin is a Helsinki-based sound artist, composer, musician and inventor of digital and analogue instruments. In recent years he designed an interactive music system called Sensor-Sound-Machine, which is based on a combination of ultra sonic sensors, solar panels, microprocessors and musical software. Timlin has studied Jazz drums at the Hochschule für Musik Franz Liszt, Weimar and Music Technology at the Centre for Music & Technology, Sibelius Academy and McGill University, Montreal.
