Ikivihreät sekä vähemmän tunnetut jazzsävellykset heräävät eloon Jaska Lukkarinen trion huippumuusikoiden käsittelyssä. Syvässä ensemblehengessä yhteen puhaltavan trion musiikissa soivat monipuoliset vaikutteet: amerikkalaisen jazzperinteen rytmiikka ja harmonia kohtaavat eurooppalaisen soundillisen ilmaisun, jonka tekee pelkistetyksi jazztriolle tyypillisen harmoniainstrumentin puuttuminen. Trio kunnioittaa tulevalla live-levyllään esikuviensa Sonny Rollinsin ja Joe Hendersonin perintöä.

Ensilevynsä vuoden 2013 alussa julkaiseva KVR trio (Kannaste-Viinikainen-Riippa) koostuu niinikään Suomen jazzmuusikoiden kärjestä. Yhtyeen ohjelmisto on yhtä epätavallinen kuin itse kokoonpano, josta puuttuu basso. Jussi Kannaste ja Teemu Viinikainen ovat säveltäneet ohjelmistoa nimenomaan tälle yhtyeelle ja ohjelmistoa täydentämään on tutuista jazzstandardeista valittu mielikappaleita – tavalla jossa instrumenttien normaalit roolit on jouduttu unohtamaan. Trion jäseniä yhdistää persoonallinen, vahva ja rohkea ilmaisu ja hyvä musiikillinen huumorintaju.

Eva ja Manu sekä Aino Venna julkaisivat molemmat ensilevynsä vuonna 2012 saaden lämpimän vastaanoton. Evan ja Manun musiikki on syntynyt suurimmaksi osaksi videoblogilla kuuluisaksi tulleella Euroopan matkalla, jonka aikana pariskunta löysi yhteisen tavan tehdä musiikkia. Evan jazztausta ja Manun rocktausta kuuluvat kevyesti yhtyeen yhteisessä sujuvan luonnikkaassa popfolkissa.

Aino Vennan musiikissa kuuluu rakkaus 50-lukuun ja menneen maailman kirjoihin ja elokuviin. Keitoksen päämausteisiin kuuluu ranskalainen chanson, italoiskelmät, jazz ja folk, ripauksella vanhaa rock’n rollia.  Suomalaisnaiseksi harvinaisen matala- ja tummaääninen Aino Venna laulaa rakkaudesta ja yksinäisyydestä iloisen melankolisesti.

Molemmat yhtyeet esiintyvät täyden orkesterinsa kera. Aino Vennalla on mukana piirtoheitin-VJ Anna Antsalo, tuottajanaan Espoon taide- ja tietotekniikkakeskus Cartes.

Klara Rudas: installation
Amount: granted 400 euros for material costs
An art piece by young Hungarian artist Klara Rudas was selected for Cartes Flux 2012 Festival by Festival Jury. The production required a small production support, which was granted. Reconstruction is an experiment to bring the peculiar world of a settlement in Hungary into an exhibition space in Finland by means of a sound installation consisting of human voices.

Mikko Kallinen & The Company: digital dance performance
Amount: granted 1350 euros for the production
Professional dancer Kallinen has created an interesting experimental project. Supporting this production helps to realise the performance combining art and technology. With the support, the artist will create a dance performance, which is a part of his long-term work with dicital dancer consept. The production is a small but combines art and technology exploring the possibilities of movement and how to blend it amoung other art forms. Research and development work is done in co-operation with Aalto University’s Media technology department, one of the establishers of CARTES. The performance will be presented at Cartes Flux 2012 Festival of New Media Art.

Applying for Cartes Studio and equipments is still open.

The musical power couple comprising singer-violinist Veera Railio and pianist-singer Maija Ruuskanen is putting an act together with Pauli Hanhiniemi and his double bass-playing companion Ville Rauhala. The audience is in for an intimate concert with a warm atmosphere where the acoustic palette of instruments and the harmony singing of Ruuskanen, Railio and Rauhala create a fantastic tonal setting for the legendary song productions of Hanhiniemi. The video art by media artist Timo Wright is produced by CARTES, Centre of Art and Technology Espoo.

The record sales of protest rap artist Paleface officially exceeded the platinum level in the spring of 2011. Paleface went on to scoop up three Emma Awards: Male Soloist of the Year, Hip hop/Electronic/Reggae Album of the Year and Etnomusic Album of the Year. In the Funky Awards, Paleface won the Artist of the Year, Album of the Year and Song of the Year for his Helsinki–Shangri-La album. Paleface was also an international nominee for the Nordic Music Prize as well as the Album of the Year in the Impala Awards. In addition to material from the Helsinki–Shangri-La album, the concert features older songs that are important to the artist. In addition to the soloist, Paleface ja Räjähtävä Nyrkki (“Paleface and the Exploding Fist”) features Tuomo Prättälä, Aki Haarala, DJ Leijonamieli, Mikko Pöyhönen and Heikki Laine.

Oddarrang is a band formed by Olavi Louhivuori in 2003 with a unique sound that has taken Finnish jazz to a new direction.

Olavi Louhivuori, drums & compositions. Ilmari Pohjola, trombone & vocals. Osmo Ikonen, cello. Lasse Sakara, guitar. Lasse Lindgren, bass. Louhivuori’s compositions smoothly combine influences from Western art music, alternative rock/pop, ethnic music and African American rhythm music. Louhivuori focuses on creating moods, colours and landscapes through his music, surpassing musical categories and conveying strong emotional experiences to the listener. Oddarrang’s debut album, Music Illustrated, won the Emma Award for Jazz Record of the Year in 2007. This concert features music mainly from the second album, which will be released in autumn 2011. The album, which has been refined and developed for a long time, reveals a renewed Oddarrang where dark hues and minimalistic sound environments take the listener even farther on a musical journey.

Jo Stance is the joint project of drummer-producer Teppo Mäkynen and vocalist Johanna Försti. The group released its debut album in the autumn of 2010. In addition to a faithful fan base in Finland, the project, which has now grown into a seven-member soul band, has also been widely popular abroad. For example, the Californian radio station KCRW appointed Jo Stance’s debut single, Hey Girl, one of the best love songs in 2010.

The evening also features National RGB VJ’s, who have also worked with Jo Stance before. The video art is produced by CARTES Centre of Art and Technology Espoo.

Professional beatboxer Felix Zenger uses his voice as his instrument. He produces incredible sounds, imitations and rhythms, creating new and unique music. According to his own estimate, he can produce about 1 000 different sounds or combinations of sounds. Felix has performed with many top international musicians and he has been a visiting artist on albums and gigs by numerous Finnish artists. His first solo album will be released in spring 2011. This concert features some of the surprise performers who are also visiting artists on the album! Vj-collective Random Doctors creates the live-video art for the concert.

Founded in Helsinki 2004, vj-collective Random Doctors is now one of the most active vj-groups in Finland. Their energetic live performances are combination of wild improvisation and professional attitude. Mixing up motion graphics, still images and video footage they explore the depths of our cultural subconscious fearlessly challenging djs and musicians to push their limits.

Sting oli lauluyhtye Rajattoman Hannu Lepolalle yksi musiikillisista ensirakkauksista. Tämän musiikki ja erityisesti laulutapa ovat vaikuttaneet Lepolan musiikilliseen kehitykseen enemmän kuin kukaan muu yksittäinen musiikintekijä. Rajattoman kanssa tehdyn Queen-produktion myötä Lepolalla heräsi uusi kiinnostus myös Stingin versioimiseen.

Videotaidetta iltaan tuo VJ-ryhmä Xploitec, jonka muodostavat Heikki Ryynänen, Sami Sorvali sekä katalonialainen Daniel Bosch. Xploitecin esitykset pohjautuvat reaaliaikaiseen kuvamiksaukseen jossa vahva grafiikka ja liikkuva kuva yhdistyvät narratiivisiksi kompositioksi. Ryhmä on esiintynyt viime vuosien aikana useita satoja kertoja erilaisilla festavaaleilla, tapahtumissa ja klubeilla ympäri Eurooppaa. Se muodostaa myös liikkuvan Guerrilla VJ Uniti, joka mahdollistaa liikuvan kuvan esittämisen kaupunkitilan pinnoilla. Xploitec on osa Wieniläistä Eye-Con VJ-toimistoa.

Tammikuun Café louhi sisältää kaksi settiä uutta Marzia: karheaa kamarimusiikkia Marzi Nymanin ison orkesterin kanssa sekä laulusarjan Maria Ylipäälle ja haitaristi Niko Kumpuvaaralle – illan, joka yllättää monessa käänteessä.

Naisäänelle ja haitarille tehty laulusarja on harvinainen laji. Marzi teki Maria Ylipäälle ja Niko Kumpuvaaralle keväällä 2009 Oulun musiikkijuhlien tilausteoksena haitarilaulusarjan, joka saa nyt Tapiolan kantaesityksensä. Tekstit ovat uusia suomalaisia runoja. Café Louhen sovitusta rikastuttaa laajempikin muusikkojoukko. Illassa kuullaan myös mm. tuttuja kappaleita Marzin trion ensimmäiseltä levyltä sekä ensiesityksiä keväällä julkaistavalta uudelta levyltä.

Mirja Mäkelä ja Trio luovat intiimin, intensiivisen ja runollisen jazzkokonaisuuden Runoisa, joka venyy herkistä sävyistä aina irrottelevaan improvisointiin asti. Sävellykset ovat pääasiassa Mirja Mäkelän omaa käsialaa ja tulkitsevat mielenkiintoisia ja kauniita suomalaisia tekstejä.

Dalindèon vahva sekstetti kääntää tunnelman juhliin iloisen bossanoivalla ja mielenkiintoisen melodisella jazzillaan. Dalindèon sävellyksistä vastaa kitaristi Valtteri Pöyhönen, jolle olennaista on “vanhan hyvän ajan” jazzin tunnelma ja saundimaailma tämän päivän raikkaalla otteella.

Cartes Flux 2012 Festival combines art and technology with an unique and surprising way. All the events are free of charge and there is no age limit.

This year the Festival is concentrating on enlivening the public spaces around the City of Espoo. The aim is to offer art experiences to all kinds of audiences by bringing the art works outside the traditional exhibit venues, such as galleries and museums, into the public spaces.

The Festival program consists of performances, installations and video works. There are also workshops and lectures where the audience can participate and experience the media art by doing and learning themselves. The main event takes place at the Exhibition Center WeeGee´s WDC-venue on Saturday 20th of October. In 2012 the Festival is organized for the sixth time by CARTES – Center of Art and Technology Espoo.

The Cartes Flux 2012 Jury members were Andy Best, a Media Artist and a Researcher from Aalto University and Päivi Talasmaa, a Chief Curator from EMMA – Espoo Museum of Modern Art. More detailed information about the art works and the program will be updated on Festival website.

You can meet Kacper Ziemianin and see some the musical instruments he has made on Monday, August 13, at 6 pm, when he will give an Artist Talk in the MUU gallery.

KACPER ZIEMIANIN is MUU’s artist in residence in August 2012.

Kacper Ziemianin is Polish sound artist, based in London. In his Artist talk Ziemianin will present his background, education and main interests. He will play examples of his works, both audio and video, and show instruments that he has made. He will talk about future plans and about the exhibition that he is going to have at Gallery Akusmata in Helsinki.

Ziemianin’s exhibition “Around the Clock” will be open in the Akusmata gallery 18 – 31 August 2012. Opening of the exhibition Friday 17 August 6-8 pm. MUU’s Sound workshop, run by Ziemanin, will be held in CARTES, Espoo. The residency is organized in cooperation with the Finnish Artists’ Studio Foundation.
