Cartes Flux 2012 Call

Cartes Flux calls for Digital Artists and creative people to participate in the selection for the festival of New Media Art. This year’s focus is on art works which are movable and suitable for public spaces. The call is for Finnish and international experimental and innovative artworks combining art and technology. We appreciate fresh and unique approaches.

Please, don’t find the categories restrictive. We would love to see unique, weird and unusual approaches. In case you feel it’s hard to fit your work to the forms found, email us and let’s find a way to describe it.

The sixth Cartes Flux takes place on October 2012 and is hosted by the Centre of Art and Technology CARTES, Espoo, Finland. In 2012 the Festival program consists of screenings, artist talks, workshops, lectures, installations and performances. The festival venues are in Espoo and Helsinki.

PERFORMANCES

The theme of your performance is open but we look for newish things, so the artwork should have been completed within the years 2010 – 2012. The focus of the selection will concentrate on dance and audiovisual/sound performances and the innovative use of the digital technology which becomes one with the message/idea of the artwork.

Please, include to your submission following information about the performance and the artist/artists in English or in Finnish

Artwork:

Basic information about the artwork (name of the performance, artist/artists, nationality, when the artwork have been completed, duration)
A brief description of the idea for the jury (4-5 sentences)
A detailed description of the performance for the jury
A summary of the performance description and the idea for communication (2 sentences)
A detailed list of necessary equipment, description of the requirements of the space and any other requirements
Information about the previous displays of the performance (date, number of displays, place)
High resolution photos of the performance for communication (2-3 photos), if the performance have been photographed
A short (max. 10min) documentation of the performance on DVD can be added to the submission, if it is relevant.

Artist/artists:

Bio (max. 800 character) and CV
A photo of the artist/artists for communication

NOTICE! All submission, materials and films will be included to educational archive of CARTES. We may use selected artworks and materials, for example photos of artworks and descriptions, to communication purposes before and after the Flux Festival 2012. From this year’s selection we may also make a Cartes Flux 2011 compilation DVD that introduces this screening at festivals and events throughout the cultural, international artists and filmmakers communities. CARTES Foundation is a non-profit organization and will not in any case utilize your film for monetary gains. The copyright of the artworks remains with the Author in all cases.

A detailed list of necessary equipment, size, weight, description of the requirements of the space and functioning, any other requirements
Information about the previous exhibitions where the artwork have been exhibited (date, number of exhibitions, place)
High resolution photos of the installation for communication (2-3 photos)
A short (max. 10min) documentation of the installation on DVD can be added to the submission, if it is relevant.

FILMS

The theme is open but the films should have been completed within the years 2010 – 2012. The focus of the selection will concentrate on the innovative use of the digital technology which becomes one with the message/idea of the artwork. Especially experimental, non-linear and philosophical approaches are encouraged. Preferred length is 15 minutes. or shorter. The films have to be submitted in DVD PAL. The films with dialogue in languages other than English, Finnish or Swedish should be subtitled in English.

WORKSHOPS and LECTURES

The theme and the target audience of the workshop and the lecture are open. However, the theme should be easy to approach. The workshop should be quite short and well planed package that it fits in the Festival’s one-week timetable, for example 4h x 2. CARTES offers spaces and equipment for lecturer and workshop tutor. We are looking for fresh and interesting new themes, which includes both art and digital technology. Lecture or workshop should give new information and skills for art and hobby projects and encourage participants to create new pieces and find new perspectives. The language of the workshop and lecture can be English or Finnish.
