Cartes Flux 2011 is an international Festival of New Media Art. Festival programme consists of short films, installations and performances chosen by professional jury. Programme includes also artist talks and workshop. Free entry and no age limits.

Festival starts with an opening club on 18th of October at Kino Tapiola. Opening club’s programme consists of short films and performances in relaxed cultural atmosphere. Installation exhibition is at the Valssaamo hall in Cable Factory during the Festival time 18th to 23rd of October. There is also a longer exhibition at the Cable Gallery opening already on the 5th of October which is part of the Festival.

Festival programme includes selections of short films, which last 30-40 minutes per selection. The films are shown as screenings at Kino Tapiola.

Please, don’t find the categories restrictive. We would love to see unique, weird and unusual approaches. In case you feel it’s hard to fit your work to the forms found, email us and let’s find a way to describe it.

The fifth Cartes Flux takes place on October 2011 and is hosted by the Centre of Art and Technology Cartes, Espoo, Finland. The Festival program consists of installations, screenings, artist talks, workshops and concerts. The main festival venues are in Espoo and Helsinki.

The theme of your installation or performance is open but we look for newish things, so the piece should have been completed within the years 2009 – 2011. The focus of the selection will concentrate on the innovative use of the digital technology converging the subject matter.

Submission should include: a brief description of the idea (4-5 sentences), a detailed description of the functioning, size and any other requirements as well as a detailed list of equipment. A short (max. 10min) documentation of the installation on DVD can be added to the submission if relevant.

No participation fee.

You can send your submission by email or mail. Please include to your mailed submission a CD-rom containing your bio, a description of the idea and 2–3 still images of the piece. If you choose to send materials by email you should include a website or ftp where we can easily download your materials. In both cases you should send your bio, contact details and a description by email to flux [@] cartes-art.fi

There is also a call for for linear audio-visual media.

FILMS

TRiCKSTR
an audiovisual environment with artificial personality

TRiCKSTR is an audiovisual environment. It consists of a large pixel light wall, loudspeaker, a pressure-sensitive and camera-monitored action arena, as well as generative and interactive sound and image software. In addition, this complex environment includes a voice that demonstrates the readiness to communicate whenever humans step into the action arena. When there is no longer anyone on the action floor, TRiCKSTR enters regenerative mode, i.e., lapses into contemplation about itself…

Perception, time, subject

Notions of perception, time and subjectivity are central to all art, where traditionally the visual arts have been understood as spatial and music as a temporal. Audiovisual new media art proves this division to be problematic. It permeates the division of perception and allows us to build our perception anew. In this new setting the subject becomes a mechanism to articulate time and space entwined. Although perception is always subjective, here the awareness comes forth as technologically mediated, ”coloured by technological lenses”. A spectator looking at an artwork becomes simultaneously exposed to it. Within the new media this exposure may deepen into immersion, as the audio-visual scene also surrounds the spectator with moving sounds and images. Through this the mechanism of perception is brought to a new level, where the attention of the spectator becomes enhanced, exceeding the natural perception. Being located on the converge between art and science, new media art is privileged to map out the myriad of possibilities for points of concurrence.

This convergence also benefits both of these worlds as the Artists of new media constantly employ and develop new tools and philosophies in order to realize as well as convey the unforeseen, and as such accelerate the fine-tuning of technological development together with the experience of the spectator within the art of the present.

NEW MEDIA ART MAY CAUSE YOU TO THINK DIFFERENT!

Within the present Festival the majority of the artworks are either fully digitally modelled or the audiovisual material has been treated in a way that would have not been possible without the digital means. In order to bring forth a more complete spectrum of the happenings of the current new media, the Festival also includes some more traditional film or video works, executed within the last few years, where the attention deals more with the experiments of the narrative form than experimenting with the new technologies. This year we also decided to include the angle of participatory new media where the interaction with the artwork becomes further enhanced.

The philosophy behind Cartes Flux is to bring fresh international New Media Art to Finland. This is combined with works made by Finnish Artists in order to provide the audience with the broadest possible view of what is going on with the New Media of today. Also within the Flux this year there is a retrospective of short films by Oliver Whitehead “works from 1967–2007”, an artist born and bred in the UK who moved to Finland during 1971. Whitehead is also holding an artist talk where he will show selected films, on the opening night of the festival Tuesday 17th April, 7 p.m. at Café WeeGee.

The screening takes place on Thursday 19th April, starting from 5 p.m. at Louhisali, Espoo Cultural Centre in Tapiola. Together with the retrospective of Whitehead there are 17 new works of international Artists presented with their Finnish peers.

This years festival brings also interactive installations to the foyer of WeeGee: “Laughing my Guts Out” – physically interactive sonic installation by Andy Best and Merja Puustinen combines strong physical presence with exciting interactive fun for the participants, the teenage students of computer arts from the Espoo School of Arts have created a virtual city of “Espo” and the students from TKK Helsinki University of Technology are presenting two captivating worlds “Metsä” and “Elämän joki”. These works are suitable for all ages, please come and enjoy!

The festival concludes on Tuesday 24th with a simultaneous audio-visual performance by Shinji Kanki together with students from Kuvataide-akatemia; “OverWholyRoly – GeeWee” – Cage, Post Cage and Beyond, 7 p.m. at Café WeeGee. The audience will be invited to participate with the creation of the performance!

Welcome to the Cartes Flux vol1!

Cartes Flux new media film festival is proud to present the first public screening at the premises of Espoo Cultural Centre, Louhisali in Tapiola, Finland.

After the screening of this festival, with the kind permission of the participating Artists, Cartes Flux DVD vol1 is set to be shown around the world, through cultural institutes, film festivals and other public screenings.

This program consists of digital film shorts from Finnish and International Artists. Among the selection of short films there are many premieres for Finland which include a film by Jean Dupuy, a visionary of the early art and technology movement he was also prominent in the ‘Experiments in Art and Technology’ (E.A.T.) in New York during the 1960s. To bring the current new technology with the old, Cartes Flux also gives the pedestal to younger creators. Although this program is intended for all ages, special attention has been given to make this festival especially geared towards a younger audience.
