Energie! storms the senses of the spectator with an electrified flicker, where the image / sound moves in several directions simultaneously.

THORSTEN FLEISCH (DE): ENERGIE! [05:07 min, 2007]

From a mere technical point of view the tv/video screen comes alive by a controlled beam of electrons in the cathode ray tube. For ‘Energie!’ an uncontrolled high voltage discharge of approx. 30.000 volts exposes photographic paper which is then arranged in time to create new visual systems of electron organization. Even though the result is abstract, it tells a universal story older than the world itself.

THORSTEN FLEISCH (b. 1972, Koblenz, Germany) began experimenting with super 8 film while at high school where he also exhibited his first film, a super 8 loop. After high school and community service in an institution for the mentally ill he went to Marburg to study art, music and media at Phillips Universität. One year later he changed to the Städelschule in Frankfurt in order to study film with Peter Kubelka. There he started working with 16 mm film > Besides working with 16 mm film and video he also made a computer animation (called Gestalt) that won several awards and received an honorary mention at Prix Ars Electronica in Linz (Austria) the biggest festival for art generated by or involving computers. > He now lives and works in Berlin where he enjoys experimenting with high voltages and x-rays. Recently he began exhibiting his photograms which capture high voltage discharges. These photograms are also the source material for his new film ‘Energie!’.
