Media artist Felix Hardmood Beck (DE) will have a presentation based on his interactive installation ‘Zoanthroid’ at Aalto Media Factory on Wednesday 19.10. at 16-18. The ‘Zoanthroid’ installation is part of the Cartes Flux 2011 festival exhibition at Cable Factory and will be displayed at Valssaamo, Cable Factory, in Helsinki, 18-23 October, 2011. At the presentation hosted by Aalto, Felix will present a selection of media objects, technile organisms and kinetic sculptures that were developed either at the design studio ART+COM or as his personal art projects.

Place: Aalto Media Factory, Hämeentie 135A, Helsinki.
Media Factory is located in Arabia Center. Enter the building through the same entrance as Iittala Outlet shop, then take the stairs to the third floor corridor.
Time: Wednesday 19.10. at 16-18

Zoanthroid – a Hybrid Entity is a kinetic object with origins in evolutionary biology and media technology. Its tuning-fork like tentacles are raised and lowered in organic movements to lull approaching prey. Zoanthroids feed on human admiration.

The skeleton and the external organs are formed by metallic, the internal organs by electronic parts. The body of the Zoanthroids have a cylindrical base shape, as seen with their biological relatives; Hexacorallia Zoantharia. Limbs and body parts are constructed bilaterally. As with other seanemones, Actinopharynx (leg, neck passage), Mesentery (chitterlings) and Siphonoglyph (dense ciliation around the oral disc) form the main features. The tuning fork-like cilia (lat. Helianthopsis Mabrucki; forked or branched tentacles) fulfill the purpose of communicating with their environment. In doing so, they are sensor and actuator in equal shares. And as sensor-like organisms with sensory-sensitive devising capabilities, distances to predators or breeding partners are perceived.

Felix Hardmood Beck was born in Düsseldorf, Germany in October 1978. He studied new media design at the University of La Laguna, Canary Islands, Spain and the University of the Arts Berlin, Germany, where he did his thesis in the form of a digital pilgrimage in the summer of 2007. In 2011, he completed his ‘Master Scholar’ under the patronage of Prof. Joachim Sauter. He works fulltime as an Art Director and Concept Designer for the Berlin based design studio ART+COM. As an artist, he works in Berlin and the Canary Islands. His work has been exhibited in Berlin (Germany), Vatnajökulsþjóðgarður (Iceland), Enschede (Holland), London (Great Britain), Istanbul (Turkey), Tokyo (Japan), Linz (Austria) and now in Helsinki (Finland).

ART+COM is a Berlin based studio for new media design, specialized in translating content into spatial environments using interactive media to create vivid experiences. Since the earliest days of the genre the company has been a pioneer of media design, art, technology, and research. Its projects range from interactive exhibits and installations to media façades, immersive scenographies and rooms.

Cartes Flux 2011 Pre-Exhibition now Open!

Cartes Flux Pre-Exhibition is now open at Cable Gallery. The Pre-Exhibition presents Martin Bircher´s sound installation Digital Enhancement as well as Pasi Rauhala and Matti Niinimäki´s interactive installation Ping Pong Rocking Chairs. The Exhibition will be open until 23rd of October.

Digital Enhancement is a sound installation consisting of an electrified Symphonion Brevet No. 28, a synthesizer, an amplifier and four headphones. The Symphonion musical box dates back to the beginning of the last century and its mechanical workings are combined with digital technology to convert it into a MIDI sequencer. The original programmed music, embossed on steel plates, can be played on the synthesizer, which is programmed to mimic the sounds of the Symphonion.

Pong is one of the first computer games ever created. Ping Pong Rocking Chairs is Pasi Rauhala and Matti Niinimäki´s version of that game tradition. This interactive installation consists of 70’s furniture that is modded with modern technology to work as a game platform. Old rocking chairs have built-in motion sensors, which move the bats in the game. Two spectators sit in the chairs, swinging the bats to play the game visible on a television monitor.

The Exhibition is open 6th – 23rd October 2011
Gallery opening hours: Tue 11–18
, Wed–Fri 11–17
 & Sat–Sun 12–16
Address: Cable Gallery, Cable Factory, Tallberginkatu 1 C, Helsinki

Cartes Flux 2011 presents an open lecture conserning music and sound production with embedded systems. The lecture will be held as a part of the festival on Saturday 22nd of October, 14-16 at Puristamo, Cable Factory in Helsinki.

The available technology at the beginning of the 21st century offers new and fascinated possibilities for artistic creation. While contemporary artists are keenly exploring the creative potential of this technology, we witness an increasing tendency to connect the physical world with the digital world. This open lecture will present methods how real-time interactions between man and machine can be realized. It will hereby focus on the human-machine interaction within the context of sound art, interactive installations, live performance of computer music and improvisation with digital musical instruments.

Location: Puristamo, Cable Factory, Helsinki.
Date: Saturday 22nd October
Schedule: 14:00-14:45, 15 minutes break, 15:00-15:45 + Q&A
Target Audience: everyone interested of Digital Sound Creation and Physical Computing

Topics covered during the lecture will be amongst others:

- Introduction to digital sound
- Conversion of sensor data into sound
- Principles of interactive digital musical instruments
- Performance with digital musical instruments
- Pitfalls of digital technology

The lecture will be held in English, is open to all and strives for being informative as well as enjoyable. Its primary aim is to reveal basic principles that might inspire and facilitate the artistic use of digital technology.

Marko Timlin is a Helsinki-based sound artist, composer, and improviser. He regularly performs with self-made analog and digital musical instruments, creates sound installations and gives lectures about the artistic use of digital technology. Timlin has deepened his intuitive interaction with technology during numerous concerts all over Europe and North America and through collaborations with complementary art disciplines like dance and visual arts. He has studied jazz drums at the Hochschule für Musik “Franz Liszt”, Weimar, and music technology at CM&T at Sibelius Academy, and McGill University, Montréal.

Ever wondered how you could automatically turn on granny’s old vacuum cleaner – scaring burglars away – when someone is moving in the hallway? If so, Arduino will be your thing: It is a prototyping platform, which makes it quite simple to add interactivity to your project. With some lines of code, written in the free Arduino sot ware and uploaded to the Arduino board, you have a lot of power at your hand. Arduino applications can be communicating with software on a computer or run stand-alone.

In the Arduino workshop at Cartes Flux 2011 the participants learn how to make some noise with Arduino and how to use different sensors/actuators to control it like an instrument. The workshop is aimed at creative people, who have some basic experience with coding and electronics. The workshop will be held in English. Participants are required to bring their own Mac or Windows computers with them, onto which the Arduino software is installed during the workshop. Take your own Arduino Uno board with you! There will be also few boards for loan.

Martin Bircher – The workshop trainer Martin Bircher was born 1978 in Aarau, Switzerland and lives in Finland, where he works as a full-time Lecturer for Digital Media at KyAMK University of Applied Sciences. He is a media artist and an electronics enthusiast, has a background as an electrician and holds a degree in Fine Arts. He has been using Arduino for over five years in education and own projects. Martin is not only passionate about digital culture but also about sharing his knowledge.
